A blast has erupted in Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport’s aircraft marshalling area and has left one female caretaker killed, another wounded.
The blast erupted around 02.05 a.m. on Dec. 23 and the condition of one of the two women, Zehra Yamaç (30) who has recently lost her life, had been critical. Canan Burgulu is still in the Marmara Training and Research Hospital for medical interventon.
The cause of the blast has not been identified so far, while investigations continue at the scene, conducted by officials and police teams. On the other hand, initial reports count the possibility of an external attack during investigations.
The flights will not be interrupted, said airport terminal operation officers. Entries and exits of passengers continue in its ordinary flow at the airport.
Several police teams have been deployed at the airport, after the Istanbul Police Department gave alarm following the tip-off. Number of police officers who are deployed to the area has been growing, as security measures, including to ensure safety of police teams at the scene, have been boosted.
A Bell 429 helicopter with infrared camera capacity was also deployed at the blast scene. Investigations were intensified inside some of the planes.
“We heard the sound of the blast and did not hear anything else. I believe we heard the sound three times. Then, we were informed by officers that this was actually a blast" witness Devrim Saygılı said, who was in the airport when the blast erupted.
Two major airlines companies made statements following the incident.
